What is the Round of 32?

For the first time in World Cup history, the expanded 48-team format adds an opening knockout round. The 12 group winners, 12 runners-up and the 8 best third-placed teams — 32 in total — meet in 16 one-off ties. Level after 90 minutes? Thirty minutes of extra time, then penalties decide it.

The Round of 32 (1/16 final) is played from 28 June to 3 July 2026 — the first knockout round of the expanded 48-team tournament.

How does the 1/16 final work?

Thirty-two teams meet in 16 single-leg ties. If the score is level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time is played, followed by a penalty shootout if still tied.

What’s the difference between “Match Winner” and “To Qualify”?

Match Winner (1X2) settles on the 90-minute result and can land on the draw. To Qualify pays out on whichever team advances, including after extra time or penalties.
