What defines the American version of blackjack
Under American Blackjack rules, the dealer receives one visible card and one hidden card. A peek is needed when the visible card is an ace or a 10-value card, since other upcards cannot form a natural. Insurance precedes an ace-up check. A dealer natural ends play; matching player blackjack pushes.
Tables can use 1, 2, 6 or 8 decks; this chart covers 6-8. S17 means the dealer stands on a soft 17, such as ace-six. H17 means another card must be drawn.
💡 Check the rules panel:
Read the American Blackjack rules panel for those details, double restrictions and split limits. A soft hand counts an ace as 11 without busting; a hard hand cannot.
A full hand from bet to settlement
A round of American Blackjack starts with the main wager and any extra side bets. Optional betting circles carry additional costs.
🃏 How a round runs:
- 1Place a wager before betting closes.
- 2Receive two cards; the dealer receives an upcard and a hidden card.
- 3Wait for the natural check when required.
- 4Hit, stand, double, split or surrender if permitted.
- 5The dealer reveals the hidden card and follows the drawing rule.
- 6Each surviving hand is settled against the dealer.
A blackjack payout of 3:2 means 15 AUD profit on a 10 AUD natural, plus the original stake returned. Ordinary 21 after drawing or splitting generally pays only 1:1.
| Result | Profit rate | Example settlement |
|---|---|---|
| Natural blackjack, dealer has none | 3:2 | 10 AUD returns 25 AUD |
| Ordinary winning hand | 1:1 | 10 AUD returns 20 AUD |
| Push | No profit | 10 AUD returned |
| Losing or busted hand | Stake lost | 0 AUD returned |
| Successful insurance | 2:1 on insurance | 5 AUD insurance returns 15 AUD |
Why the hole card protects your extra bets
In American Blackjack, a successful dealer check happens before you can double or split. Suppose you have 11 against a visible 10 and wagered 10 AUD. If the dealer holds an ace, the main hand ends at a 10 AUD loss. You never add the extra 10 AUD for a double. After a negative check, that risk is removed.
The early check provides this protection. European no-hole-card rules may collect split and double stakes against a natural. Some no-hole-card tables instead return those extra wagers.
⚠️ Not automatically the best:
That makes American Blackjack a useful comparison point, but not automatically the best table. Poor payouts or doubling restrictions can outweigh the peek’s benefit.
House edge and the rules that move it
Sound American Blackjack strategy can keep the main game’s edge near 0.4%-0.7% under common, reasonably favourable 3:2 rules. Restrictions and 6:5 payouts can raise that cost considerably.
The house edge percentage describes expected loss per initial wager over many hands. At 0.5%, 1,000 AUD of initial wagers corresponds to 5 AUD expected loss. It does not cap session losses.
| Change, other rules held comparable | Approximate change in house edge |
|---|---|
| Eight decks replaced with six | -0.02 percentage points |
| Dealer hits rather than stands on soft 17 | +0.22 percentage points |
| Doubling after splits prohibited | +0.14 percentage points |
| Late surrender added under S17 | About -0.07 percentage points |
| Natural payout reduced from 3:2 to 6:5 | +1.39 percentage points |
💡 Good to know:
These effects should not be added mechanically. American Blackjack strategy must also change with the rules; using an unsuitable chart can surrender part of the expected benefit.
Basic strategy chart for American Blackjack
This American Blackjack strategy assumes 6-8 decks, S17, a peek, 3:2 naturals, doubling on any initial two cards and doubling after splits. Check surrender first, pairs second, then soft or hard totals. See the surrender section for exceptions.
Use the basic strategy chart against the dealer’s visible card, not a guessed hidden card. In the grids, H means hit, S stand, D double or hit if unavailable, and P split. A means ace; 10 includes face cards.
| Hard total | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 10 | A |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 or less | H | H | H | H | H | H | H | H | H | H |

Soft totals can absorb one draw because the ace can become 1. DS means double if allowed, otherwise stand.

📋 Remember:
This American Blackjack strategy selects the better average decision, even with weak hands. It does not guarantee profit or apply unchanged to H17.
Insurance, even money and side bets
The American Blackjack rules for insurance create a separate wager on the dealer holding a 10-value hidden card behind an ace. It usually costs up to half the main stake and pays 2:1. Break-even requires that event to occur one-third of the time; ordinary basic strategy does not justify taking it.
To see the insurance odds, ignore other exposed cards momentarily: after one ace is removed from six decks, 96 of 311 remaining cards have a value of 10. That is about 30.87%, below 33.33%. Exposed cards affect it.
Even money locks a natural into 1:1 instead of accepting the normal push-or-3:2 outcome. Under standard American Blackjack rules, basic strategy declines it. Pair and three-card side bets usually have higher edges; check their separate paytables.
Surrender and when it is available
The late surrender option ends an eligible initial hand after the dealer’s check and returns half the main wager. With 10 AUD placed, 5 AUD comes back. It precedes other actions, rather than refunding a failed hit or double.
For the S17 chart on this page, surrender hard 16 against 9, 10 or ace, except a pair of eights. Also surrender hard 15 against 10. If unavailable, use the normal hit or split decision. Under H17, additional surrender cases include 15, 17 and paired eights against an ace, so obtain the matching chart.

Current RocketPlay availability is unverified. Correct use reduces average loss on weak hands, not necessarily loss on the next deal.
American against European and Spanish blackjack
Before you play American Blackjack online, compare rules, not regional labels. European dealing often delays the dealer’s second card; the crucial question is whether a later natural takes extra wagers. Spanish 21 removes the four rank-10 cards from each deck but retains jacks, queens and kings.
| Format | Dealer second card | Typical decks | Soft 17 | Indicative edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| American-style 3:2 | Hidden card with peek | 1-8 standard | S17 or H17 | Around 0.4%-0.7% for common favourable multi-deck rules |
| European no-hole-card | Taken after player decisions | Often 2-8 standard | Table-dependent | Often around 0.4%-0.8%; settlement and restrictions matter |
| Spanish 21 | Commonly hidden with peek | 6-8, each 48 cards | S17 or H17 | About 0.40% S17; 0.76% H17 without redoubling |
Spanish figures require its own payouts and strategy. Do not use the preceding grids for a reduced deck.
Readers who play American Blackjack online can use the European Blackjack and Spanish Blackjack guides to examine those exceptions. The quoted edge requires matching rules and correct decisions.
Where to find American Blackjack tables at RocketPlay
To play American Blackjack online, search the table-games lobby and inspect the help panel of each result. RNG games use software dealing; live tables stream physical dealing. Evolution and Pragmatic Play offer live blackjack; their current presence here needs confirmation.
No verified AUD minimum or maximum is available for this page. Read both on the selected table, including separate side-bet limits. The Live casino hub covers the streamed format.
You can play American Blackjack online through a mobile browser where access is available. RocketPlay has no native iOS or Android application; its responsive site and supported PWA shortcut provide browser access. If disconnected, log in again and inspect round history before placing another wager and give support the round ID.
Session and bankroll rules at the table
Treat American Blackjack as paid gambling, not income. A 2 AUD starting wager is 1% of a 200 AUD session budget; four split hands doubled can expose 16 AUD in one round. The opening chip is not your maximum exposure.
Advantage
- ✅An early dealer check resolves natural-blackjack risk.
Drawback
- ❌Doubles and splits can multiply money committed.
💡 Tip:
Set a deposit limit and a stopping time before the first bet.
Raising stakes after losses does not remove the house edge. Never spend more to recover a session or meet bonus turnover.

American Blackjack FAQ for Australian players
What is the hole card and why does it matter?
It is the dealer’s face-down second card. Checking it for a natural before player decisions prevents extra double and split wagers being placed against an already completed dealer blackjack.
Does the dealer hit or stand on soft 17?
Both versions exist, so read the table notice. S17 is generally better for the player, while H17 changes some doubling and surrender decisions as well as the house edge.
Is even money ever worth accepting?
Basic strategy declines it at a standard 3:2 table. It locks in 1:1 profit but lowers average return.
What is the house edge with basic strategy?
Around 0.4%-0.7% is a useful guide for common favourable 3:2 multi-deck rules. It is not a promise about session losses, and restrictive tables can be substantially worse.
Can you surrender in American Blackjack?
Only if the specific table offers it, usually on your first two cards after the dealer check. Otherwise use the matching hit, stand or split decision.
