The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has urged internet service providers (ISPs) across the country to block access to thepokies.net, calling it one of the most significant blocking actions it has undertaken to date.
Following an investigation, ACMA determined that the website was offering online casino-style games, which are banned under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, rendering the operation illegal.
The site reportedly processes payments worth tens of millions of dollars, and data from Similarweb indicates that it attracts approximately 30,000 Australian visitors each month. Due to its popularity and potential harm, ACMA stated that this would be one of its highest-profile blocking efforts since it began using this regulatory measure in November 2019.
“We’ve received more complaints about thepokies.net this year than any other illegal gambling site,” said ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin. “People have reported losing substantial sums and being denied deposits and winnings. Blocking access sends a clear message: ACMA will act to protect Australians from illegal gambling operators.”
She warned that if an illegal site decides to keep a player’s money, there is no legal recourse for victims.
Beyond website blocking, ACMA’s broader strategy includes industry engagement, targeted enforcement, and public education. Since the introduction of stricter regulations in 2017, over 160 illegal operators have exited the Australian market.
In addition to thepokies.net, ACMA also requested ISPs to block several other illegal gambling sites, including:
-
Azure Hand
-
Abo Casino
-
Betroom
-
777Bay
-
Space Lilly
-
Jet Casino
-
Katsu Bet
-
Winz
These platforms were found to be in breach of Australian gambling laws and are now subject to enforcement measures.
